The gown - my gown - rose up over my head, and I raised my arms to help the spirits lower it over my head. As it passed over, I now saw the spirits - a pair of maids, in full Victorian uniforms, skillfully adjusting every detail of my evening dress, telling me how lovely I looked. One brushed my hair, and I felt it lengthen and prettily curl, as the other helped me put on silk gloves, making my arms as slim as they should be. As my long, silky hair was styled, the other helped me with my fine jewelry - my ears weren't pierced until she pressed the earrings to them, but now they felt like they had been for a long time.

I was completely transformed, free of my former life. Outside, I could hear a carriage pulling up... my husband to be!

The house was haunted no longer, it was a home once more, and I was the new lady of the house...

Spirits and silk

I was afraid as I realized that there were truly ghosts here... but when I saw what they planned to do, I felt my fear fade. A touch of embarrassment that my secret was so easily revealed... but then unseen hands had me raise one foot at a time to draw silk knickers up my legs, and I felt my body adapt... I smiled and embraced my fate.

How I came to be there

I had entered willingly, though not knowing what fate awaited me... perhaps the spirits of the house sensed my true nature and ensured that the boudoir would be unlocked and welcoming. I had heard the story of the lady who vanished here in the 1880s, leaving her husband-to-be distraught, and how his spirit still seeks her... but I thought it only a story...

Though I began to wonder as I found the lady's chambers, seemingly untouched by more than a century... and the temptation of the beautiful clothing was too much to resist. Surely none of it would fit me... but I had to know. At least I could hold her satin gown, her silk stockings and corsetry... but as I undressed, heart racing, I heard rustles and whispers from all around... maids coming to help the lady dress...

The Haunted Boudoir

I could feel ghostly hands begin to dress me, fastening the corset tight, drawing up stockings, placing the bustle with care. Each garment transformed me, giving me the female shape that it would fit. The corset gave me an hourglass figure and cleavage, the stockings made my legs shapely and silky smooth. Now the unseen hands took the Victorian ballgown from the dress form and I smiled delightedly as I raised my arms to help them...

Afternoon Dress | c. 1895

This dress was made by David Jones in Sydney about 1895. Established in 1838, David Jones is the oldest department store in the world still trading today.

By 1880, fashionable ready-made clothing could be bought from city department stores like David Jones and Anthony Horderns. Alternatively, a length of fabric could be bought and made up into an outfit like this one for the customer. Ready-made clothing came to dominate the market over time.
This day dress is characteristic of women’s costumes during the 1890s. The flat-fronted skirt with a train at the back creates a flowing line and the boned bodice and puffed sleeves aim to emphasise the hour-glass shape that was popular at the time. Trimmings and ornamentation include handmade rosettes on the elbows, and bronze beads and sequins decorating the waistband and sleeves of the dress.
