His sister ran off with one of the estate staff after their father died, and now there's a risk of scandal as it was understood she would marry the son of a London family. So he accepts the duty of protecting the family's good name, with his mother's suggestion that he help persuade the suitor to give up on marrying a Beaumont girl.
But... there is only one Beaumont girl...
