Persimmon silk satin
Evening dress
Medium: Persimmon silk satin and ecru lace
Date: c. 1895
Country: England
The waist of this evening gown measures an atypically slender 18 inches. Although stories of severely tight-laced corsets are almost certainly exaggerated, women often did lace more tightly for formal occasions. The full, puffed sleeves of dresses in the 1890s also made waists appear even smaller.

Oooh, delicious! - and it doesn't look at all dated! Apart from the tight bottleneck waistline, it's easy ro imagine this one worn by a film star or a posh gala guest in the present century.
